“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”
~Rumi
Some people are confused by the adjective “Divine” to the energies in creation. The confusion usually begins with our tendency to associate the feminine with female beings, and the masculine with male beings. But when we speak of the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine, we are referring to the primal energies that emanate from the Oneness in order to create everything we know.
The Lovers (VI) in the Tarot depict the perfect alignment of the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine, connected to Oneness and creating neutrality. Love is harmony between both principles—the active principle of creation and the passive one. Their nakedness represents innocence, simplicity, and soul connection. He looks at her with admiration and appreciation for her presence and her role as the vessel of his love. She sanctifies his actions by elevating them to the Divine (her gaze is upward). The union of two can only exist and remain in cohesion if there is a Third—the ONE. This union is happening within us, and when we are perfectly aligned within, it is manifested in harmony between us and the creation.
Any union based solely on ego cannot be elevated to the Divine and instead becomes a contract between two that may generate karma. Observe how in The Devil (XV), the masculine and feminine principles look at each other, creating a loop in which their energies bounce off one another without a chance to be transmuted. The inverted pentagram symbolizes mental control. When energy does not exit the mind and elevate, it stagnates and becomes toxic.
From this perfect union descends the spiritual couple—the humanized archetypes of Divine Energies: The High Priestess (II) and The Hierophant (V). Together, they embody a sacred harmony that brings alignment between the inner and outer realms. She is deeply attuned to lunar cycles, intuition, ancestral wisdom, and esoteric knowledge—qualities governed by the right hemisphere of the brain, the realm of inspiration and channeling. He, guided by the left hemisphere, embodies structure, tradition, exoteric knowledge, and spiritual authority on Earth, organizing and transmitting sacred wisdom in a rational and systematic way.
Within his columns—each symbolically representing a uterus—he guards her mysteries, choosing to whom this infinite knowledge is transmitted. Not all are prepared to receive the essence; readiness depends on one’s level of awakening and consciousness. Some may access the esoteric depth, while others remain connected only to the surface.
Her blue robe symbolizes Divine knowledge, intuition, and channeling, while his red robe represents action and grounded direction. Her crown reflects the cycles of the Moon; his golden crown, the power of the Sun. These two archetypes live within all humans, regardless of gender, representing the sacred balance of feminine and masculine energies within us all.
The Empress III and The Emperor IV —Mother and Father archetypes, representing the earthy expression of existence. Their sexual union is the origin of creation, which brings forth abundance, comfort, stability, and structure. She faces forward, looking at the present and her manifested kingdom, a result of her femininity and fertility. He looks at her, devoted to the womb that empowers him. He acknowledges her importance and contribution in his kingdom. Her body, facing him, symbolizes sacred sexual union and the consecration of her womb, which manifests his seed into life, power, and abundance. His body faces forward, expressing presence, leadership, and stability within the kingdom.
The four Queens of the court cards are the four aspects of the Empress, just as the four Kings represent the four aspects of the Emperor. Each pair manifests a different element, reflecting a distinct dimension of creation: the spiritual dimension through Fire (Wands), the mental dimension through Air (Swords), the emotional dimension through Water (Cups), and the physical dimension through Earth (Pentacles).
Fire – Wands, Energetic body:
The Queen of Wands is creative, sociable, sensual, and vibrant. She has integrated her masculine side, asserting boundaries and leading with confidence. The King of Wands looks at her in complete devotion. She is his kingdom. He honors tradition, ancestry, and his roots—hence his gaze to the left. She generates ideas; he carries them out and holds them with wisdom rooted in history.
Air – Swords, Mental body:
The Queen of Swords is future-focused and grounded in clarity. She has internalized the masculine ability to set healthy boundaries and leads her kingdom toward renewal. The King of Swords is centered, emotionally detached, and guided by Divine inspiration. She strategizes with vision; he holds the master plan, anchoring their direction with wisdom and mental clarity.
Water – Cups, Emotional body:
The Queen of Cups is deeply intuitive and emotionally connected. She protects her sacred knowledge, holding a closed cup like a trophy. Her crossed legs symbolize protection from psychic interference. She guards the kingdom’s emotional field. The King of Cups, meanwhile, navigates emotional depth with grace. He has awakened his spirituality and maintains control while feeling deeply. She draws wisdom from the collective unconscious and emanates love; he embraces emotional tides while maintaining structure.
Earth – Pentacles, Physical body:
These two are rooted in practicality and abundance. The Queen of Pentacles nurtures her body, talents, and resources, radiating gratitude, which brings prosperity. The King of Pentacles sets clear boundaries, provides direction, and ensures sustainability. She generates abundance through gratitude, her womb is actively manifesting; he secures it through order and discipline.
These eight energies represent the diverse forces that reside within all humans. They are synthesized in the Empress and the Emperor—descendants of the primal couple, the High Priestess and the Hierophant—who are, in turn, the pair depicted in The Lovers (VI) while still in Paradise, before taking human form. These energies dance within us, creating a unique internal configuration that determines the types of connections we attract and resonate with externally. If our outer reality is not aligned with our desires, the revision must begin within. By working to balance these inner energies, we naturally shift our external relationships into more harmonious expressions. When connections feel unbalanced or unhealthy, it’s often a reflection of inner energetic chaos—once harmony is restored within, it will be reflected outwardly as well.
